The “COSCO Shipping Fountain” ship left Taicang International Container Terminal on Apr. 5 to sail to Peru’s Chancay Port. The 3,300-plus tons of cranes, new energy mining trucks and other machinery and equipment loaded this time will help Zijin Mining Group in the development of copper and gold mines in Peru. This is the first multi-purpose ship to depart from Suzhou Port for Chancay Port after the two sides signed a sister port agreement in March.
Statistics show that in the first quarter of this year, the value of goods such as automobiles and construction machinery shipped from Suzhou Port to Peru was about 500 million yuan, an increase of more than 30% year-on-year.
Chancay Port, built by COSCO Shipping among others, is a flagship project signed under BRI cooperation framework between China and Peru. With the opening of the port, the one-way shipping time between the two countries is reduced from 35 days to 23 days, slashing logistics costs by more than 20%.
During the construction of Chancay Port, two batches of more than 160 pieces (sets) of equipment, including container trucks, flatbed carriers, front cranes, stacker cranes and excavators, had been shipped from Taicang Port Area of Suzhou Port to Chancay Port via customized routes, which contributed to the opening of Chancay Port as scheduled.
The direct express cargo shipping service from Zhangjiagang Port Area of Suzhou Port to Chancay Port was officially launched in January this year, opening up a new “maritime expressway” connecting China and South America. In March, Suzhou Port to Chancay Port signed a sister port agreement at the Chinese Embassy in Peru. According to the agreement, bilateral efforts will be made to develop low-cost, high-efficiency and low-carbon maritime routes between the two ports to further bolster trade links.
